Pieces of Stigma
Identity and appearance play a big role in how one fits in, or doesn’t, to society. The way someone looks determines how they are treated, the opportunities they have, or not, the obstacles they face, the barriers, the prejudice. One of the beauties of personal identity is that it constantly evolves. Old ones are forgotten, new ones emerge; some identities morph or transmute. Unfortunately, the so-called norm is a pretty narrow lens. Sometimes the Self rejects the Self for not being identified as ‘normal.’ There’s nothing more important than asserting one’s identity, celebrating difference, stepping out of the shadows and into the light. My personal experience—my inward and outward journeys—is my greatest strength, driving me and my work as a designer to break the stigmas that stand between the individual and the rest of the world. Difference makes a difference.
