Users’ Autonomy
Labor and leisure are no longer independent of one another. The old adage ‘if you are not paying for the product, you are the product’ has rapidly spread into our digital structures of power, ultimately rendering our identities as a commodity. Data mining, consumer interests, and cultural context are the amalgamation of what is now immaterial labor. We are in an unprecedented time wherein society is interconnected, yet in a constant state of banal stagnation because the governance of our data lacks public representation. The root of these issues can be traced back to a more physical relationship between autonomy and labor, which begs the question: What perspectives from workers’ movements of the past can we extract and appropriate for a power shift in human autonomy? Within the pursuit lies the potential to reinterpret value and freedom, so that we might regain our identity and, by extension reality, truth.
