Lost Treasure
Throughout the colonial era, Western imperialist powers occupied three-quarters of the world. Many cultural artifacts from the colonies were stolen by their overlords. Most are exhibited in Western museums. Today, as more and more people become aware of the crime and the importance of these artifacts, museum repatriation is a topic of heated debate. Many visitors take a museum's oversea collection for granted, unaware of the colonial history and struggle behind it. As a designer, I am interested in helping to facilitate difficult, often controversial, public conversations. The exhibition, Lost Treasure, is designed to provoke visitors into questioning issues surrounding the ethical status and repatriation of colonial artifacts and inspire them to join the wider conversation. The exhibition uses modern technologies like Virtual Reality to provide viewers with the experience of ‘seeing’ the exhibited artifacts in their original and rightful settings.
