A Stitch in Time
What makes graphic design graphic design? The formal principles that distinguish the practice from craft, for instance? The answer is yes and no. Yes, because not all craft is design-based. No, because the principles of design can be applied to work in a range of mediums: print, digital, animation, wearables, performance, and textile, and more. As a designer, I am especially interested in exploring uncommon materials: a leaf, a swatch of linen. With this work current work, I revived some elementary exercises in graphic design — color theory, circle-triangle-square, and typography — and recreated them using the medium of embroidery. Each is an independent work of graphic design at a scale familiar to the world of sample stitching.
