Face Perfection
We live in a world consumed by a desire for constant advancements and blinded by the next new trend. But the desire for continued improvements of everything from technology to products to environments, you name it, in addition to societal pressures to conform, distorts our impression of ourselves and this, despite every newfangled thing, makes us very unhappy. The norm says: look this way, talk this way, dress this way, be this way, act this way. The norm repudiates difference. No one can meet its toxic standards. As a Korean American female designer and writer, I am especially interested in overturning the norm and celebrating difference. My work raises questions, such as: What toxic standards does your culture and contemporary society place upon you? and Why doesn’t everyone just mind their own doggone business! Irony is my communication strategy.
