Confront Empire
Entrenched patriarchal structures, civilians whose lives are ravaged by war, human suffering, inequalities. I am deeply affected by such things. As a designer, I shine light on subjects that touch me so that I might, in turn, touch others. Seeing the innocent suffer makes us want to look away but facing injustices head-on and empathizing are the first steps toward mending a broken world. As a woman, gender inequality is especially important. We are told that it is not safe to go out on our own but, ironically, 1 in 4 women is assaulted by an intimate partner at home. So, if it’s not safe to go out and it’s not safe to be at home, where exactly is it safe to be a woman?

I board the train and quickly take a seat, pulling out my book as if to say, Do not disturb. Someone sits down next to me, brushing my elbow. It’s him. In a train car with lots of empty seats, he had to sit next to me. Great.
