Mindscape
We sleep and dream dreams within a dream. It all feels so real. Dreaming we bypass the mind and enter the mindscape, devoid of reality but also comprised of it. We may not be able to escape reality, but we can alter it with our minds, knowingly, unknowingly, voluntarily, involuntarily. My design work mines the mindscape in an effort to generate forms that are slightly but not entirely unfamiliar, triggering unscripted sensations and/or emotions in the mind of the viewer. According to the Alzheimer’s Association an estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older currently suffer from Alzheimer’s dementia. Intermixing reality and fantasy, Losing My Mind investigates the six stages of dementia in purely visual form. Illuminating and haunting, this work reflects the deteriorating mindscape of a mind spiraling out of control.

Inspired by The Caretaker, Everywhere at the End of Time, a six-and-a-half hour long album by James Leyland Kirby, a work of disfiguring 1920s music exploring the six stages of dementia. Losing My Mind appropriates the nostalgic 1920s retro-style form, visualizing the deteriorating stages of dementia, a slow, painful process of losing oneself to the point that one forgets everything and everyone, including oneself. My aim is to broaden the understanding of the disease among those who experience the loss of a family member or loved one suffering from this debilitating disease.

Covid 19-induced social distancing and isolation from friends and loved ones is enough to drive anyone’s imagination wild.
